Hyparschale Magdeburg Wins the Deutscher Lichtdesign-Preis 2026

The Hyparschale in Magdeburg has won the Deutscher Lichtdesign-Preis 2026 in the category Innenbeleuchtung – Öffentliche Gebäude. The lighting design for Ulrich Müther's 1969 shell structure, comprehensively restored between 2019 and 2024 following plans by gmp, was developed by Lichtvision Design. Raoul Hesse and Claudio Rojas Wettig led the design. The scheme keeps the curved concrete roof legible, minimises the number of suspension points for the large pendant luminaires and integrates the emergency lighting into the general lighting, while providing very good glare control for the building's many uses as an event and exhibition venue. In the same edition of the award, The Living Tree at the Radisson Hotel Berlin was nominated in the category Projekte mit künstlerischem Hintergrund. The installation, lit by Carla Wilkins, Eugenia Sinatti, Sirirat Nualvilailuck and Eyad Abdin, occupies the base structure of the former vertical aquarium in the hotel atrium and is animated by a DMX-controlled play of light.
